Walking on Air is approaching a busy period in the year with 2 visits to other gliding sites coming up. These represent great opportunities to fly at other sites, promote Walking on Air to others and to partake in fun "aprés" gliding social activities. These events need WoA pilots and helpers. We also have 2 training events at Portmoak, A flying course run by Joe Fisher and a lifting course.
The 2 visits are:-
Firstly to Eden Soaring. Dates are Friday 8th to Tuesday 12th July. We have been invited to take WA1 and some of our own pilots to fly the Pennines at Eden Soaring and to give local disabled people an opportunity to fly there. We want pilots and helpers. Please have a look at Eden Soaring. You will need to sort out your own accommodation and there is an accommodation list on the Eden Soaring website. If you are interested in visiting this challenging site, please contact .
Secondly, the Two Seater Comp at Pocklington. This is a great event with a strong social scene with lots of special "aprés" Gliding events. This link from the Wolds Website gives you a flavour of the 2 seater event. If you would like to attend, please let
know. There is Limited accommodation in their new clubhouse, but you will need to bring your own sleeping bag, you can camp on site and there are plenty of local hostelries to choose from. The 2 seater comp also has a theme each year to support a national charity. If the weather is un-flyable, there are plenty of wet weather activities and visits that can be made in the locality including the National Railway Museum, The Jorvik (Viking) centre, York Minster and a host of Air related sites to visit.
Joe Fisher is proposing to run a Summer course between the 18th - 22nd July. There are no extra costs other than normal flying charges and membership fees. This course is designed to improve your flying skills, get you to solo and meet any other training need you may have. (Joe to confirm please) If you are interested, please let Irene know.
Finally a matter that will be of interest to our volunteers. Walking on Air is planning to hold a Lifting and Handling course to minimise any possibility of our helpers injuring or aggravating an existing back injury when helping disabled people in and out of WA1. The dates are to be fixed and we will let you know as soon as possible when they are. When finalised the board request that all volunteers make every effort to attend to receive appropriate training in this important aspect of our support role. It would be great to see you all there.
